Oh My Crafts $25 gift card giveaway via Lil' Luna

The blog, Lil' Luna, posted a Valentine's banner project along with a giveaway for a $25.00 gift card to Oh My Crafts!

I just have to add that Oh My Crafts is THE place to order paper crafting supplies and tools! I order all of my vinyl there to use with my electronic die-cutting machine. I cannot begin to say enough good things about this company's extremely reasonable prices, sales, and availability of coupon codes. There are almost always at least 3 coupon codes available all the time depending on the amount of your purchase. I love that they provide coupons even for smaller orders like $20 instead of only providing coupons for purchases over $50, $75, or $100 like many other retailers. The coupon codes usually range from 10-25 % off for total purchases of any size for the 10% off code and 25% off for orders over $75-$100 usually. They are so generous! Also, though I haven't ordered vinyl from anyone else, their packaging has to be 2nd to none. When purchasing vinyl by the sheet, instead of the vinyl being rolled in tubes, the vinyl is flat, shrink wrapped tightly so it doesn't slide around and braced by a thick piece of corrugated cardboard. Then the stack of vinyl and cardboard is shrink wrapped together as well to keep everything in place. T his is all safe inside an outer packaging cardboard box that is slightly longer and wider than the vinyl in dimension. This box is great for storing your large sheets of vinyl in horizontally after removing from the shrink wrap to keep them flat and from bending or rolling up. I absolutely love their wide variety of vinyl colors available also. 12 x 24 vinyl sheets are usually $1.75 but sometimes go on sale for as low as $0.99. Bundles are available which of course reduce the price per sheet cost to you. They sell transfer tape sheets and squeegee tools for applying your vinyl projects. Some value bundles of vinyl include a squeegee or two.

My Pink Stamper Blog Hop challenge: Show My Style and Favorite Thing

I created this card for the birthday of a friend's daughter who just turned 6. Her parents did a room makeover for her birthday. The room theme is peace signs, and the color scheme is mostly the shades of brown, pink, and blue you see in this card. I wanted her to be able to display the card in her new room and have it fit right in. I absolutely love to make cards! My favorite Cricut cartridge is A Child's Year because I really love the card feature, especially the scalloped cards. I love the color combos of pink and brown and blue and brown, but had never brought the 3 colors together in one project before. My new favorite tool is the Cuttlebug machine. This card is my very first project using the Cuttlebug and I couldn't be happier with the results. The embossed cardstock just brings the whole design to the next level and makes for a more professional look. I hand stamped the Happy Birthday sentiment in chocolate brown ink and heat embossed it, then I applied the blue cardstock with pink brads. I used foam pop dots to mount the pink cardstock to the card and to add dimension. Heat embossing is my "thing" so this card definitely showcases my style well.



I made this autograph page/wall hanging for the party guests to sign. It is 12 x 12 and the center brown scalloped rectangle is 7 inches high. The design was inspired by the quilt in her new bedding set. I hand-cut the little patterned paper pieces to decorate the peace sign and used pigment ink markers to draw the little peace sign and flower patterns in the white "quilted" pieces on the peace sign.

I made these pocket cards for one of my friend's moms to give to her coworkers. She's on a "teacher team" and wanted to give them something to help motivate them as they go back to work before the school year starts. These pocket cards can be placed on any water bottle or other bottle beverage. If you do bottled water, you can place a packet of sugar free drink mix in the pocket. I gave similar cards to my son's teachers and I placed individually wrapped granola bars in the pockets of the cards in addition to the drink mix.

I used the Everyday Paper Dolls Cricut cartridge to cut the graduate, school bus, and road. I stamped and heat embossed the bus driver and kids on the bus on a neutral sand colored bazill basic cardstock. I printed and heat embossed the other sentiments on the card on vellum. The background blue and green cardstocks are Die Cuts with a View. The black and yellow card stocks are smooth and from an 8.5 x 11 Recollections brand Halloween multipack from Michael's. I also stamped the sentiment flag "Go Team" on yellow cardstock flat enclosure cards for her to write a note to each of her coworkers to motivate them for the new school year. She loved them and her coworkers did too!

I think the bright primary colors of this card, the whimsical train, and sentiment "All aboard for fun" all capture the spirit of being a kid and having fun!

Shutterfly 2010 Holiday Cards- "these are a few of my favorite things!"

Shutterfly as always has beautiful and fun designs for 2010 holiday cards and other photo products! I look forward to working with one of Shutterfly's great card designs to create our Christmas card this year. We're using a beautiful black and white portrait of our little boys for our card this year. Deciding on my favorite card instead of the right photo or photos is the more difficult task for me this year. Whatever design I choose will be one of the very colorful and vibrant card designs so there will be good and flattering contrast with the black and white portrait of our boys, and it will need to accommodate a landscape portrait.

I think the Classic Wreath 5 X 7 photo card is gorgeous, but I don't think the shape and size of the area for the photo will work for the photo we're using this year. It's absolutely beautiful though and would use this design in a heartbeat! The warm chocolate brown and cheery wreath design are great!


Shutterfly's "With Love Chartreuse Christmas Card" is a beautiful and modern twist on the traditional photo Christmas card. Bold and bright color contrast between the bright green and rich red is striking. The single initial monogram enclosed in a decorative circle is a great and modern touch. I'm one who usually has trouble narrowing down to just a one or even a few photos for photo cards. This card give you the incredible option of 5 photos on the front of one card! If you love multiple photo card layouts, this is a great fit for you! The font and filigree designs accenting this card are beautiful. I really love everything about this card! 5 photos, an initial monogram, the year prominently displayed, and space for a personalized greeting all on the front of one card makes this an excellent choice for your photo card needs.



Shutterfly's Kaleidoscope Stars Christmas Card is a quirky and fun holiday card option for those looking for something unique, modern, and pretty. The square shape of the card is great and modern too. It's definitely not a traditional Christmas card design, but it's an awesome and attractive design that will appeal to many. It's a great card to showcase a landscape snapshot photo or portrait! I love the contrast between the rich and bright green and red and the chocolate brown.



This Shutterfly Flourish Wreath Christmas Card card design is stunning! I love the filigree wreath design that frames the photo on this card. My only wish with this design would be for the background to be something other than white. It does look beautiful on screen, but I just wonder if the background would just look very blank and kind of like wasted space when printed and in person. The only reason I say this is I made a photo collage through a different photo printing service and much preferred the colored borders/background for my collage to the white background. I used the same exact collage design and photos and a colored background looked so much better. Despite this, this card is still one of my absolute favorites of the Shutterfly 2010 holiday card collection! The more I think about it, the white is the right background to not take away too much from the delicate green filigree wreath design. What would have improved this design would be a colored border, not a colored background. Had the entire card been "framed" in even a very thin red border it would have appealed to me even more. Isn't it just so lovely???

I'm happy to say I recently placed my first order with Shutterfly last month for a photo book. I was so impressed and loved it so much I ordered more books as soon as I received my first Shutterfly photo book. We spent a beautiful weekend in the NC mountains with my parents, my brother, and our two little boys. I commemorated our family trip with a Shutterfly photo book and couldn't be happier with the results. It's a beautiful book showcasing beautiful family memories! So many firsts happened on this trip too which makes it even more special.

Our 4 year old got to go fishing for the first time and he caught not one but 4 fish on his first day! We thought day 2 was a wash, but he finally caught one right before we almost called it a day. My dad was able to share this exciting first with his first grandson and it was so special. He also got to go gem mining for the first time, and my husband had never been gem mining before either. My brother and I hadn't been since we were kids so it was fun for all. My parents really enjoyed it with us also. I also did a little mountaintop photoshoot with our little guys, our youngest was 16 months old at the time and our oldest was about to turn 4. As you can imagine it's hard to coordinate photos of the two of them, but I managed to get a few precious shots. The view was amazing from the beautiful home a family friend so graciously allowed us to use for the weekend!

I can't wait to create a beautiful 2010 holiday card for our family using one of Shutterfly's awesome designs! I know I will love our holiday cards because the photo books are beautiful, high quality, and a great value!

My Halloween Cupcake Bites- Inspired by Bakerella

Inspired by the incredibly talented and creative Bakerella whose site/blog I recently discovered, I made these cupcake bites for a Halloween party yesterday. This was my first time making these and overall I was very happy with the result. I won't tell you how many hours, yes hours I spent making them though because I'm too embarrased to admit! Granted I probably began my project too late in the evening to begin with so I was more tired than I realized. I'm sure with practice it won't take so long in the future. But, due to the individual portion nature of these treats, it does take a while to roll and shape everything by hand in addition to the candy coating melting, dipping, and cooling steps.

Plus I tried to do some other shapes other than round balls for the cake part of these treats but they didn't hold up well in the dipping process maybe because the coating was pretty thick and a little stiff. I felt like it'd need to be much more liquid/runny to be able to coat them so evenly and smoothly like Bakerella does and without the filling falling apart. I tried to make ghosts which wasn't too hard to shape by hand, but like I said trying to coat them was very difficult. They might have needed to set in the freezer alot longer before dipping than the balls for the cupcake bites. I'm thinking that was the problem with the ghosts since they are free standing like the cake balls and cake pops on her website and she said to let the cake balls chill several hours before dipping them. With the cupcake bites, you need only chill them a few minutes because you're going to be placing them into melted candy bases that harden and make them sturdy before dipping the top half in "frosting." The cupcake bites were far easier to make than the ghosts and cake balls for me. For now, I think I'll stick to making the cupcake bites in the future because they are fairly easy to make and I love the look of cupcakes!

I didn't have the pleated mini Reese's cup-style candy mold, so I improvised and used a mini muffin pan to mold the base of these "cupcakes." I really think the smooth bottom half looks just as cute as the crinkled look achieved with that mold, but I'd still love to get one of those molds and give that a try too because Bakerella's are super adorable. The "frosted" tops of her cupcake bites have an awesome extremely smooth appearance ( I have no idea how she does this but it looks beautiful and I'd love to pull it off myself sometime). One dip attempt into the process I decided not to try achieving this smooth look due to the thickness of the candy coating so I went to town with the spreader dabbing globs of melted candy coating on top of my cupcake bites and spreading with the same strokes I'd use to frost actual cupcakes. I'm happy with this textured frosting look and think it looks pretty cool too.

I used Betty Crocker Milk Chocolate cake mix, Betty Crocker cream cheese frosting, and Wilton candy melts in orange, white, and black. I dusted the tops with orange sugar I scored from Target's $ Spot.

What you'll need:

1 box cake mix in desired flavor
1 16 oz. container of cream cheese frosting
Candy coating melts, bark, or other chocolate that melts well for dipping
Wax or parchment paper
cookie sheet or other type of flat tray
decorative sprinkles, sugar, or other candy is optional

1. First, bake your cake and then let cool completely before crumbling.
   
2. Crumble your cake by spoon or hand, hands are easier and more fun! (I wore Mr. Clean latex free gloves I have for household cleaning since they said they are approved for food preparation. This kept anything from sticking to me, plus I wanted to be very sanitary since I was taking these to a party. Wearing the gloves also takes away they worry about fingerprints when handling the cupcake bites to dip or "frost" the tops. Of course you can wear any food preparation gloves like they wear in bakeries/delis or special candy making gloves.)
3. Stir the cream cheese frosting into the crumbled cake and mix by hand. Again the gloves were a huge help with this and I can't imagine doing it without.
4. Roll mixture into desired size balls. Bakerella suggests quarter sized and that was about the right size to place into the melted candy bottoms in my mini muffin tin. Place balls on wax or parchment paper covered cookie sheet and chill in freezer for a few minutes. Bakerella suggests 3 minutes. Don't worry if they're in there a little longer because mine weren't in any danger of freezing in the few extra minutes they were in there.
5. Melt desired color of candy coating for cupcake bottoms. Spoon in about a teaspoon-teaspoon and a half or so of melted candy into your mold, muffin tin, or other container of choice. Immediately place a cake ball into the center of each opening filled with melted candy making the coating come up around the sides of the cake ball but not all the way to the top so it looks like a cupcake. Place them into the freezer for a few minutes to harden the candy coating bottoms and set the cake balls in place in it. - I just kind of eyeballed what I thought would be a good amount of melted coating, about 3/4 filled and this worked out perfectly. Any less than half full made bottoms that were too hard to hold onto to "frost" or dip the tops.
6. Melt desired color of candy coating for cupcake tops. Remove cooled and hardened bottoms from the freezer and one by one dip or frost the tops of the cupcakes with the melted candy coating and place on a wax or parchment paper covered cookie sheet. Before the tops harden decorate the tops with sprinkles, sugar, or other candy if you want.
7. Have fun admiring all of your hard work and force yourself to taste test one. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it. I can't wait to try these in different colors and themes. They would be adorable at baby or bridal showers and I may even make some for my sons' birthday parties in the future. Thank you Bakerella for your incredibly creative ideas!!!

Please bear with me while I begin to build inventory, as I have not had the time to create anything in a very long time! In the last few weeks, my son has finally begun sleeping on his own and through the night so I actually am able to work on projects after he's in bed! I haven't had a spare second to myself in a full year when at 4 months old he decided co sleeping was the ONLY way to go!! Don't get me wrong, I do miss co sleeping a little bit, but I LOVE finally being able to put him down on his own for the night and do what I need/want to! I'm so glad he is finally getting the proper night's sleep he needs and I have a little "Me" time back, yeah!!

I am so excited to be taking a big step in the right direction for myself! I absolutely love being a mom, but now I'm going to devote some time to creating arts and crafts that I enjoy so much too!

For years family and friends have been strongly suggesting that I HAVE to go into business for myself to sell my work, and I always receive rave reviews and praise for the various gifts, invitations, and cards I make for them. I have always wanted to go into business for myself, but have never gotten around to it because it always felt like there wasn't enough time for me to devote to doing this. I was very busy in college balancing classes, work, and extracurricular activities such as orchestra which didn't leave room for much else.

Fast forward to 2008: I'm a proud stay-at-home mommy to the most amazing and loving little boy I could ever imagine, I have a degree in Business Administration, and I'm seeking the most ideal work-life balance possible. I would love to help support our family in some way, but I am not quite ready to re-enter the corporate workforce having to place my young son in daycare. We are a military family, so I need a career that I can carry with me wherever the military takes us.

I definitely realize how much I have missed creating hand made gifts and cards. Now is the perfect time in my life to pursue the goal of doing what I love for a living! I hope to at least be able to contribute to retirement and college funds for our family by selling my art work. Being able to stay home with our son and be his primary caregiver and "first teacher" is priceless! I and many others can already see the positive impact being a stay-at home mom has had on our son so far. It is my dream to be able to stay home with him and also work from home as an artist. I can't think of any other jobs in the world that would fulfill me more than this combination. I'm taking the plunge and taking steps towards meshing my business education with my passion for arts and crafting!

Caardvarks "Mix It" Challenge- Father's Day

The latest challenge over at Caardvarks is "Mix It." The challenge is to use patterned papers from three different manufacturers on the front of your card. I decided to submit the card I made for my husband for his first Father's Day.

Our son was born in September of 2006--I can't believe he's nearly 9 months old already, and he's cutting 4 new teeth all at once today! He's getting so big and has learned to wave and clap and loves to play peekaboo on his own now with anything he can hide his face behind. It's so cute to see him learn something new everyday.

For the front of this card, I chose a photo from when our big 9 month old boy was just a little newborn peanut in his Daddy's arms.

I printed the photo on vellum and mounted it using 3M Artist's Mount spray to a piece of "Father and Son" themed patterned paper. There are five layers of mat alternating between brown and blue patterned and solid papers behind the vellum photo. The card base is white card stock. I punched holes in the top of the card and used a white ribbon to embellish the top like I often do on invitations.

Patterned papers used:

1. American Crafts (the goods series): 2-sided dark chocolate brown, blue, and white large polka dot pattern. Reverse side is solid blue.

2. Frances Meyer: Light blue with small white polka dots

3. Masterpiece Studios (Stemma series): Pale blue paper with brown "Father and Son" themed script pattern

Hello Bling Caardvarks Challenge

I made this card for Caardvarks Challenge 6. The challenge is to create a "Hello" card using Bling. I think I just may be hooked on using Bling in my cards and layouts after this challenge!

The card base is two squares of solid blue textured cardstock. I punched holes down the left side to bind the front and back of the card with ribbon. I use this binding technique to make brag books and scrapbooks, so I decided to try it out on a card and I LOVE the result!

I cut flower designs from a piece of patterned paper. Some are mounted flat and some are mounted with pop dots to give the card more dimension. I used blue and yellow glitter glue to add a little subtle Bling to the patterned paper cutouts. I added round blue and aqua rhinestones to the center of each flower cutout and one rhinestone dragonfly. I stamped and embossed "hello!" in white ink on the right side of the card.

Blues, greens, and aqua are so calming and pretty. Definitely my favorite colors. This card will be going to my aunt who loves dragonflies.

Orange Card Challenge-"Just a Little Note"

I stumbled upon a great little card challenge blog called Caardvarks tonight and I'm so glad I did! There's an Orange Card challenge due by midnight PST tonight. At first, I thought, no way I have time to do this, plus, I'm not used to working with orange all! But, that's why they call it a challenge, right? I was up with my 8 month old anyway, so I began working on a design while he was still awake and started making the card once he was back to sleep. The first inspiration for my design that came to mind was stringed instruments because I play violin and viola. I love the vibrant, natural hues of orange, yellow, and red in the wood used to make these beautiful instruments!

I drew and hand-painted the violin with water color pencil on watercolor paper, and I tore and painted the edges of the water color paper and musical note patterned paper. The design is mounted on vertical striped patterned paper in different shades of orange and a base of solid orange card stock. I then hand-stamped and embossed the cover message"Just a Little Note." Over sized light orange brads frame the corners of the card.
